A Taste of Korea in Manila

11:38 PM

Craving for Korean cuisine? Get your K-Food fix without having to travel to Seoul by visiting these Korean barbecue restaurants and cafes in Manila!

It all started with my parent's craving. They have this tendency to go "binge-eating" the same type of food for weeks! And behold, last time's highlight: Korean. Cafes to cafes, shops to shops, and restaurants to restaurants, we went Korean hopping all over. An avid Korean fan I am, I did quite enjoy the experience. Below are some of the K-places I got the chance to check out . (The list is in no order of ranking or whatsoever.)

1. Sariwon Korean Barbeque

For high-end grilling experience, Sariwon is your way to go! Established in Korea in 1938, Sariwon continues the legacy of serving world-class bulgogi served with the brand's legendary secret sauce, sweet potato noodles and vegetables. Other must-try items on its menu include a variety of stews, noodles and grilled dishes.

2. Jang Ga Nae

G/F, 8137 Plaze, K. Escriva Drive, Brgy. San Antonio, Pasay City
Aguirre Ave., BF Homes, Parañaque City

This affordable Korean Restaurant is a favorite among K-food lovers because of the variety of delicious side dishes that are served with every order. Their menu recommendations include ssamgyeopsal, ojingeo bokkeum (stir fried squid), pajeon, dolsot bibimbap and kalbi chim. Jang Ga Nae also sells refreshing sikhye by the litre which you can take home and enjoy with your family and friends.

3. O'Rice

G/F The Forum, 7th Avenue Corner Federacion Drive, BGC, Taguig City

Casual Korean dining is what customers love about this restaurant. The place stays true to the taste of authentic Korean food. You'll love their tteokbokki (served with ramyun, shrimp tempura, crispy dumplings and rice rolls), rice bowls, lunch box sets and noodles. A must-try for the first timers is the O'Rice Army Base Stew, which is a fusion dish that became popular after WWII. The warm stew is filled with sausages, ham, ground pork, macaroni, beans, tofu, ramyun and vegetables.

4. Big Mama

Unit P-4, Ferros de Bel-Air Tower condominium, Polaris St., Bel-Air Village, Makati City

Looking for a resto that serves authentic Korean chicken and unique dishes such as jok bal (pig trotters), odeng tang (fish cakes with warm broth), and bundaegi (YES, this is the boiled silk worms from street food stalls in Korea. Tip: I wouldn't advise you to google this. The visuals aren't the best - believe me.). The restaurant is equipped with dividers to give privacy per table and serves as a family restaurant by day and a favorite drinking spot during the night.

5. Mr. Pizza

G/F Greenbelt 3, Makati City
Ground Floor, Robinsons Place Manila, Ermita, Manila

Korea's favorite gourmet pizza restaurant is now open! Mr. Pizza offers gastronomic satisfaction through its 300% Principle which promises that all pizzas are hand-tossed, filled with full-heated toppings and grill-baked. Customers can choose from a wide range of pizza crusts to go with unique flavors such as bestsellers Potato Gold, filled with a hearty mix of potatoes and bacon, and Eggta, which has a soft and creamy egg tart crust topped with Camembert cheese and beef steak strips (Personally, it was really good!!!). Other variations include Crab Cream and Gorgonzola thin crusted pies and classics like Bulgogi and New York Special. Not in the mood for pizza? Mr. Pizza also offers a variety of entrees such as chicken, pasta, risotto, and salad to satisfy you.

6. Ye Dang

Goldpark Center, 88 Meralco Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City

With the large groups of Koreans who frequent this restaurant, this place is must try even in the Korean community. Ye Dang has all the popular Korean dishes we could ever crave for. If you’re going for the grilled meats, be sure to pair them with a refreshing bowl of their Bibimbap loaded with different kinds of vegetables and mushrooms. Other favorites you can’t miss are the Japchae (stir-fried starch noodles with vegetables and beef) and the Tteokbokki (rice cakes in sweet red chili sauce).

7. KPUB BBQ Restaurant

28th Street corner 5th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City

This modern Korean grill is in the heart of BGC that is accented with blaring blue and purple lights at night running through the restaurant. There's a large TV screen inside featuring K-pop hits and keeping you entertained while grilling your oh-so-juicy meat in front of you.

8. Cafe Seolhwa

2/F The Forum, 7th Avenue Corner, Federacion Drive, BGC, Taguig City

Satisfy your sweet tooth by indulging in a cool and refreshing bingsu from Cafe Seolhwa! Korea's favorite shaved ice dessert mimics powdered snow topped with ingredients that range from fruits and beans, chocolate and injeolmi (soy bean powder). The cafe also serves other food and pastries such as cakes, croissants, toast, tteokbokki and coffee drinks.

9. Cafe de Seoul

Unit 12, 2/F One Archer's Place Building, Manila

Tailor-made for students around the Taft area, Cafe de Seoul mostly caters to students in for study groups, reviewing or just hanging out. The place is designed with a big space, the bright interiors, the little details: post-its on the wall, cute padlocks no doubt inspired by the ones in Namsan Tower. If your planning a perfect lazy day in a coffee shop, Cafe de Seoul is one of those hang-out places you should check out! Give their coffee drinks, bingsu and cakes a try! Not to mention they started serving rice meals as well.

10. SHP Bibimbap Cafe and Restaurant

Ocampo St, 755, Manila, 1110 Metro Manila

SHP Bibimbab has come up with the brilliantly cute idea of placing huge, huggable stuffed toys around the place which anyone can pick up for a cuddle. To comfort you even more, you get Korean food on the cheap here! Their bestseller is their bibimbab which you can get in variations of beef, chicken, spam, tuna, and bulgogi. If you’re in the mood to really eat your feelings, order up a bowl of their Spicy Cheese Ramen and a plate of their Gimbab for a filling meal!
